Anticipating the Return of Christ

The Old Testament is full of amazing miracles. One of the miracles that catches my attention again and again is the parting of the Red Sea.

I read this part of the exodus of the people of Israel from Egypt and scratched my head wondering why they refused to believe and trust in the Lord after so great a miracle and demonstration of the Lord’s presence and power.

Truly, if the parting of the Red Sea is not enough to convince us of the Lord’s active presence, then we are not going to be convinced!

Some people say that if only the Lord would do this or that then they would believe, when the reality is that the Lord has already done many more spectacular miracles in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. Then, when the Lord does not show up in their lives the way they would like, they discard the Lord as if He was yesterday’s newspaper. The Bible was specifically written to reveal to us who the Lord is, what He has done for others, and transmit to us His promise that He will deliver and provide for us in the same way because He is changeless. Our task is to apply the Scripture to our circumstance and spend time reading and praying to allow the Lord to show us how He wants to use the Scripture to speak to us and guide us in this moment.

If He is capable of moving the Red Sea to lead His people to safety, what could He do in your life? What could He do for your circumstances? The key that unlocks this providence and power in our lives is belief. The people of Israel showed us, first and foremost, how easy it is to yawn at the greatest miracles of the Lord and when times are tough to grumble and complain that the Lord led us into a trap and abandoned us.

If we are all honest, we will admit to loathing like this against the Lord. The most amazing thing is that in the face of such distrust and lack of faith the Lord did not wipe the people of Israel off the map.

Didn’t you notice that the Lord caused the Red Sea to flood over the Egyptians and not the people of Israel? If He really wanted to lead you into a trap, you would be non-existent and a distant memory. But, such is the work of the devil, to bait us into a trap and then take advantage of us. This is not the Lord. He is full of love! When we are most vulnerable, He is most powerful to save, protect and provide.
