In this post, we will consider evolution and, in particular, its role in Communism and how it is differentiated from Christ and Christianity.
Evolution is purported to be a scientific theory on the origin of the universe and is commonly credited to Charles Darwin. There were, however, others before Darwin who had already circulated evolutionary ideas. There have been numerous other authors after Darwin as well who have staunchly defended evolution in an effort to gain its widespread acceptance. However, there are a number of problems with evolution as a scientific theory.
We’ll start with the “Science and Hebrew Tradition” lecture by Thomas Henry Huxley who was a staunch supporter of evolution. In this paper, he proposed three theories on the origins of the universe – that the universe has existed from all eternity, that the universe was created, and that the universe evolved into existence and into what it is today (evolution).
In the very beginning of the paper, Huxley lays out an argument for the use of circumstantial evidence only as the basis for evaluating the three theories and claims that testimonial evidence is of no account. In fact, later in the paper, he admits that evolution is not supported by any testimonial evidence. Against creation, Huxley uses only the Genesis account of creation and observation of fossils, layers in the earth’s crust, and stratified rocks to form his conclusions. These, he claims in the paper, do not conform to the Genesis account of creation, thus, the entire concept of creation must be discounted. This is hardly a serious or credible scientific inquiry, and on circumstantial evidence alone, he invests no genuine effort to investigate creation.
Rather, Huxley takes almost three-fourths of his lecture to make an argument for the circumstantial evidence of evolution. Interestingly, Huxley highlights the problem that fossil evidence, whether known to exist for a few thousand years or presumed to be 30,000 years old, demonstrates no material change in organisms that existed then from what exist today. This is true in lizards, horses, cats, crustaceans and even fauna – Huxley admits all this. However, toward the end of his lecture, Huxley creates a narrative that evolution takes a far longer time to work than just 30,000 years. Curiously, however, Huxley relies on physics and geology to establish the duration of the universe, opening the door for it to be hundreds of millions or even billions of years old.
This, my dear friends, requires an immense amount of faith to accept for there simply is no evidence whatsoever to corroborate such a claim. That organisms do not evolve even over a 30,000 year period cripples any credibility of evolution as a scientific theory. That evolution requires many millions of years over which to produce variations is not science, but mere conjecture.
Huxley clearly crosses the line into faith – we must simply believe and have faith that the theory is true. Belief when reality (Huxley’s own 30,000 year old fossil evidence) presents a much different picture of things is delusion. However, that evolution takes hundreds of millions of years to work itself out is now accepted in much of education today as true. Unfortunately, there simply is no evidence to support it.
To form his conclusions, Huxley largely relies upon Darwin’s original belief that organisms struggle for existence and, thus, are capable themselves of evolving. Those which survive were able to evolve and develop variations. This is where our attention will be focused for the remainder of this post. (For further reading, I would suggest The Evolution Of Man Scientifically Disproved by William A. Williams.)
Darwin did not necessarily develop a scientific theory of evolution. Instead, he developed a theory commonly known as natural selection, later coined as survival of the fittest. Weaker species, malformed organisms, diseased organisms, and so forth will, by nature, become extinct. Only the most fit, the perfect gene, and the strongest will survive.
This idea, in a vacuum, is not necessarily problematic. From a Christian perspective, this statement points to a void that compassion and mercy can fill, particularly among humanity.
Unfortunately, natural selection has led to horrific evil. For starters, it forms the basis of value clarification (the subject of a later post, hopefully). It is also the basis for eugenics and makes a substantial contribution to the philosophical justification for abortion.
On top of this, natural selection is documented to be the basis for racism, the horrors of Communism, and the horrors of Hitler. David Klinghoffer quotes from a book by Chinese scholar, James Reeve Pusey, as overwhelming evidence that Mao Zedong was heavily influenced by Darwin’s ideology to commit the atrocities of the cultural revolution. In short, Mao believed himself to be the fittest and that those who were killed were naturally selected for extinction. He saw himself as assisting the evolutionary process and believe he was justified in doing so. Hitler very much believed the German race was superior, which led to the mass deaths of Jews, Christians, and others who he believed would mar the German race.
Darwin unleashed an ideology devoid of morality, and once publicized, he could not put it back in the bottle. Pusey writes, “Darwin created the ideological vacuum [by undermining traditional ideas] that cried out for something like Marxism, and he established criteria for what that something should be. The new fit and fittening ideology had to be based on the Western science of evolutionary progress. It had to identify inevitable, natural stages of human social development. It had to promise historical inevitability and yet at the same time recognize the vital importance of human action. It had to be based on struggle and yet stress mutual aid among members of the ch’un. It had to provide a non-racial enemy to explain China’s inner and outer troubles without damning the Chinese – and it had to give the underdog a chance. That last stipulation was not Darwin’s by any stretch of the imagination, but every Chinese Darwinist we have seen forced Darwin to give the underdog a chance.”
Paul sums up the essence of Christianity in Colossians 3:8-13, “But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”
In Christ, we are exhorted not to classify or divide people by color, race, status, wealth, or any other criteria. We are, instead, united by Christ who created all. We are all sinners in need of salvation through the cross of Christ. See also Acts 17:22-32 where Paul refutes the idols on Mars Hill. Interestingly, the Greeks at that time believe people came from the ground, which seems to be an early variation of evolution. Paul’s words still ring true today.
